Preserve Your Vision With Omega 3
Age Related Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in the United States. It affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows us to clearly see objects. It is estimated that 200 million people worldwide suffer from age related macular degeneration, and that this number will double in the coming years. Research indicates that diets rich in Omega 3 fatty acids can offer protection against macular degeneration. In a study of 290 patients by the Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science Journal, researchers indicated that intake of fatty acid containing fish was significantly lower in patients with Age Related Macular Degeneration.
The DHA component of omega 3 is found in high concentrations in the retina and is an important structural component of the photoreceptor cells, which supports the role of omega-3 nutrients in age-related macular degeneration.
A 10 year study conducted by the Women’s Health Study examined the relationship between the dietary intake of Omega 3 fatty acids and age-related macular degeneration. The study consisted of thousands of women who, in the beginning, didn’t have Macular Degeneration but were diagnosed during the span of the 10 year study. Researchers found that both the level of Omega 3 fatty acids and its ratio to Omega 6 fatty acids are important in determining risks of age related visual impairment.
This study indicates that regular consumption of omega-3 significantly reduces the risk of age related macular degeneration. It also found that while boosting dietary intake of Omega 3 is important, it is also important to reduce the consumption of Omega 6. A 1:1 ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 is ideal.
